It was a pleasure to stage the 2011 Tenerife Ladies Match Play at Golf Las Americas, 32 world class players made it a thrilling competition under the new format and after two days of match play had reduced us to the best eight players we witnessed a thrilling final days battle. Becky Brewerton from Wales was a popular winner after finishing runner up three times in Tenerife, the previous near misses must have played on her mind but she stayed cool and played terrific golf to finish on 68 and four under par.
There was a nervous wait for the other players to finish, Nikki Garrett of Australia and Carlota Ciganda of Spain both reduced the lead coming up to the 18th hole but a water shot for Carlota and a missed 15 foot putt for Nikki sealed their fate. Becky could hardly bear to watch the final shots but was delighted and generous when she accepted the trophy, the flowers and the cheque for 40,000 euros. Becky praised the course, the organisation and those volunteer staff who helped make it all such a success, she also singled out Carlota for special praise, the young player showed she will be a force to be reckoned with in the ladies game.
There was much to admire as the competition unfolded, a late replacement Danielle Montgomery from England showed she wasn’t here just to make up the numbers, her Pro Am win sent out a warning and she cruised through to the final eight. Carlota claimed her place in history by sharing second spot with Nikki on her debut, and Frances Bondad also from Australia impressed with her play and boosted her standing in the sport. The course played its own starring role and with typically hot sunny Tenerife weather the worlds media and spectators had plenty to enjoy.
