Sponsored and organized by Sands Beach Resort, the 2012 Costa Teguise Spring Duathlon attracted more than 100 athletes to take to the starting line last month, assuring its inclusion in the 2013 Lanzarote sporting calendar.
Urged on by crowds of family, friends and visitors to the popular east coast resort, athletes took on the blustery conditions to complete a 5km run, a 20km bike ride and then a final 2.5km run. First to break the tape was Xavier Queral in an overall time of 1:04:59 with Aitor Navarro just two minutes behind him overall with a time of 1:06:58 and Fernando Toribio taking the third podium spot in a time of 1:07:26.
Awarding the trophies, Lanzarote Cabildo President Pedro San Ginés, himself a competitor in the race, joined with athletes and supporters in thanking Sands Beach Resort for their excellent organisation of the event.
Staged entirely in and around Costa Teguise, Councillor for Sports in Teguise, Eugene Echeday, praised The Spring Duathlon as “an event that allows many people to enjoy the landscapes of Teguise including Costa Teguise and many other zones.”
Offering a superb base for sports groups, athletes and their families, Sands Beach Resort in Costa Teguise is a strong supporter of Lanzarote’s sporting events and sponsors of athletes Nico Ward and Rafa Botello. On 9th December 2012 Sands Beach will be sponsoring and organizing the Lanzarote International Marathon 2012 in which more than 500 athletes from across Europe are expected to participate.
Rapidly becoming one of Europe’s leading sports destinations, Lanzarote’s year round sunshine and varied terrain make it the perfect destination for land and sea sports.
