Several destinations were in the running to host the 2011 Guardian and Observer Travel Awards but Tenerife was chosen and Turismo de Tenerife pulled out all the stops to provide a full programme of events for the one hundred leading travel industry professionals.
The award presentations were the centre piece of the four day visit and were held at a working banana plantation Finca Punto del Lomo in Guargacho. Mariella Frostrup made the introductions and presentations in distinguished company including Carlos Alonso Tenerife Minister For Tourism (photo)Â Miguel Angel Santos CEO of Turismo de Tenerife and Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Junior Minister For Tourism in the Tenerife government. Carlos Alonso spoke of the benefits the hosting would bring to Tenerife.
“Such a meeting is a huge promotional tool bringing together top executives from the leading companies in the British travel industry and giving us a unique chance to showcase the major attractions that the island offers as a holiday destination.” Turismo de Tenerife supplied the local transport and excursions, among other services. During their four day stay, attendees were treated to some of the outstanding attractions in Tenerife. Highlights of the programme of visits and activities organized by the island government’s public company included, whale watching, golf, kayaking, jeep excursions to Mount Teide, wine tour in the north of Tenerife, Masca gorge excursion or visits to Santa Cruz and La Laguna
